The Diatomous Earth swimming pool filter, commonly known as the “D.E. Pool Filter” for short can be a great asset to your pool water during the summer. However when your D.E. pool filter starts to give you trouble or causes problems you will have to preform something called “Pool Filter Troubleshooting”. When you troubleshoot your D.E. pool filter you will be eliminating what parts are good and won’t need to be replaced. You will also be able to find out what parts have failed on the D.E. pool filter and then be able to replace them. How To Troubleshoot D.E. Pool Filters

Even though there are many different models and styles of Diatomous Earth swimming pool filters, the internal / external parts like filter grids, filter grid manifolds, o-rings and multiports work in the same way. These parts are also the ones that commonly fail or will need to be repaired no matter what brand or model filter you have. Most problems that you will experience with a D.E. pool filter will be caused by lack of proper maintenance by the owner. This includes leaving the pool filter out in the winter elements in the off season, not acid washing the pool filter grids, not replacing needed parts like failing mulitports and leaking o-rings. All of these parts will start to show age and wear before they fail but often they are not replaced until they completely fail. There will of course be unique situations where your D.E. pool filter is experiencing something that no one has ever seen before but there are also many common problems with D.E pool filters.

There are also two different types of D.E pool filters. Some D.E filters will use grid to filter the pool water and others will use something called “fingers”. These finger filter grids are found mostly in the Hayward EC-series pool filter line. Filter Grids and Filter Fingers can give you the same kind of problems as they are both covered in a fine mesh. If this mesh becomes damaged on either a D.E. filter finger or on a grid the D.E. powder will wind up back in the pool. So just because one is shaped like a finger and one is shaped like a grid, that doesn’t mean any one is stronger or won’t give you less problems, as they both will if damaged.

Problem: “My Pool Filter Is Putting D.E. Back Into The Pool”

Solution: When a D.E. swimming pool filter lets d.e powder back into the swimming pool it means that the filter grids, filter fingers, filter manifold or the multiport is bad. When the filter grids have a rip or tear in them they will allow D.E. to pass back into the pool. When the manifold is cracked it will do the same. If the multiport is bad it can cause the D.E. powder to not go into the filter at all and instead go directly back into the pool. If you are seeing small amounts of D.E. powder in your pool chances are that you have a rip or tear in your filter grid.

Problem: “My Hayward EC-series D.E. Pool Filter Is Allowing D.E. Powder Back Into The Swimming Pool and I have found no rips or tears in the fingers”.

Solution: The Hayward EC series line of filters not only uses filter fingers but also uses something called “tube sheets”. These tube sheets are the plastic disks that all of the fingers slide through. There is a top and a bottom tube sheet in all Hayward EC series pool filters. Chances are that you have cracks in your tube sheets. Look in the center of the tube sheet and you will see spider cracks in the tube sheet. These types of cracks are caused by bumping the handle to hard when back washing. Replace the cracked tube sheets and D.E. powder will not go into your swimming pool any longer.

Problem: “My multiport is on filter but the pool is not clearing up”.

Solution: Just because the multiport dial is set on the filter mode does not mean its actually working correctly. Many times the spider gasket inside of the muliport will go bad and then you will think the pool is set on filter mode but the water is really being diverted to the pool or out the backwash line instead. Replace the multiport or the mulitport gasket to correct this problem.

Problem: “My D.E. Pool Filter Gauge Shows High Pressure Even When Its Not Running”

Solution: If the gauge on your D.E. pool filter shows a high pressure even when its off then most likely your gauge is broken and needs to be replaced.

Problem: “Where Can I have My Pool Filter Acid Washed?”

Solution: Most swimming pool supply centers will offer swimming pool filter acid washing. You will usually have to bring down your pool filter grids or fingers and they can acid wash them for you. You can also soak your grids in white vinegar to help cleanse your filter grids as well.

Problem: “How Do I access My Filter Grids Or Fingers?”

Solution: You will need to remove the bolts around the flange or remove the belly bad nut and spring. Once you do either one you will be able to access the filter grids.

Problem: “My Backwash Line Has Water Coming From It When On Filter.”

Solution: If your backwash line has water coming from it when the swimming pool pump is running and the mulitport is set on filter then this means that you have a bad multiport gasket or possibly the entire multiport is bad. You should change either the gasket or the multiport.

Problem: “How Do I bleed The Air From My D.E. Pool Filter?”

Solution: You can bleed the air out or your D.E. pool filter by using the air bleed screw that will be on top of the filter. Most new filters will have an auto air bleed that will bleed the air for you. If you are looking to bleed the air out of the Hayward EC style filters then you will find the air bleeder screw right by the discharge fitting. On other D.E. pool filters the air bleed screw is usually near the gauge on the pool filter. The air bleed screw is also always on the highest point of the filter.

  1. thanks for the advice. Am able to regen now although water is very dirty so i am still backwashing often. I was afraid something was wrong with the filter but that’s not the case. I appreciate the reply !!

    • Hi Jonathan,

Remember small filter area, Big pool. Ya, it will take lots of back washing and as the pool clears up the cycles between the back washing will grow in time.

Let me know if you need more help,

I would also suggest cleaning the filter every couple days with a filter wand,

      Joseph

  2. we are trying to vacuum our pool & can’t get any suction to the vacuum head. We just cleaned the filters, we have a Sequel 11 DE filter

    • Try turning off inlet that you do not have the vac. conected too. That increases the suction.
      Also backwashing before vac. helps.

  3. Have a hayward perflex de filter. Has worked great for 8 years now. But now even after backwashing the return flow is gone in about a half and hour. Changed powder numerous times but still the same result and have cleaned fingers and filter out 3 times. Never had this problem before even when pool was dirty in previous years.

    • Scott – I am experiencing the same problems. I was actually thinking my fingers (filters) need to be replaced. My pump is 13 years old and I never had them replaced. They seem intact and there are no tears. I cannot find anything on the Hayward website indicating they should be replaced after so many years. Let me know if you are able to find the problem or solution. Thank you. Linda 7/11/10

      • we found our problem to be cracked tube sheets the top and bottom ones were cracked caused by the bump handle being bumped too hard and of course the age of the filter is 10 years old. You can replace yourself just slip off bump handle and slide off and check the top and bottom near the center and look for hairline cracks and also make sure your not missing any nuts or screws and make sure they are tight. if it is cracked you need to replace them there is a top tube sheet and a bottom one check both sides.

  4. PLEASE HELP!!!! I have a Hayward EC75A, new last year. The problem is, anytime I turn the pump on DE powder goes into the pool for about 20 seconds, then APPEARS to stop. I have taken the filter apart and checked the tube sheets, gasket and the fingers, they all appear to be in great shape. I have replaced the “O” rings in the bump rod, still have the problem. Oh how I wish I had my old sand filter.

  5. I can not get the air our of the filter. When I bleed the air it blows out and then get sucked back in. I have cleaned the filter and still get no preassure.

  6. We have a DE filter that was new last Aug. It worked perfectly fine that whole month, Now gauge starts out on 20 the decreases to 10. We need to shut it off ,boot it and start it again. There tends to be dirt piles and spots of algae and once we keep filter running and brush it it gets clean but once we leave it it will stop and buiild up again. My husband has taken it apart and cleaned it many times. Can anyone help us?

  7. I just replaced old Filter with a new Hayward DE4820. Still getting earth in the pool. Replaced with another NEW Hayward DE4820 and still getting earth settling all over pool bottom and sides. How can this be?

  8. My Hayward DE filter gauge shows zero pressure, but has great vacuum/suction. I do maintenance regularly and everything looks great (grids, o-rings, seals, gaskets, etc.). The little vacuum guy was just serviced because it wasn’t moving very fast, but still lazily gets around the pool – used to be much faster. The feet pads look ok and as I mentioned the suction is great, but the rockers just don’t seem to be rocking very quickly. As I mentioned, I just had it serviced – they said they replaced some parts and tested it, and they said it was fine (a very reputable place that has been servicing the vacuum guy for years). I’ll try changing the rocker/feet pads and see what that does, but any other ideas?

    • Hi Emile,

That is normal if you were adding earth to the pool filter. Where you adding earth through the skimmer when you saw the earth in the pump?

Please let me know and I can help you further,

      Joseph

      • It’s not when i’m adding the earth, it happens when i shut the pump off. It seems to filter back.
pump model sp1592cnp AO SMITH POWER FLO MATRIX.

        • Hi,

When you get time, take apart your filter and clean the grids. Chances are the filter is caked with D.E. and some is flowing into the pump. If that’s not the case, then you should install a check valve on the discharge side of your filter.

Let me know if you need more help,

          Joseph

  9. Hi I have a nautilus ns36 DE filter and I have been having a weird issue going on. I had vacuumed it yesterday and lost all my suction before I was finished, after fishing around and I realized I had a buildup of leaves caught in the drain at the skimmer basket. I snaked it out and it started working but tm pressure was very low. I figured I would clean the filters since it had not been done in a very long time. I opened the belly band and pulled off the top and I had old DE and dirt cakes 2 inches think. I hosed it all off in a downward motion and then sealed it back up, I then backwashed it till my water was clear and turned pump back on. I reapplied the correct amount of DE which was 3 1/2 pounds. And now I’m having problems with the prime! The small strainer basket at the pump fills half way with water and then empties and this cycle repeats every few seconds. I get small amount s of action out of the jets as it drains and the pressure goes from 10 to 0 ever time it cycles! I’m very frustrated I have been reading about bleeding the air out of the lines but that doesn’t seem to be working heeeeellpppppppppppp please?

  10. I have a DE filter on my pool. I dont know too much about pools, bought house last yr and pool was empty. The pool has the intake with a filter, then a secondary filter, then the DE filter, then water goes to a “merry-go-round” type thing with about 8 lines to pop-ups. Only about half of them work. But anyways, that is the setup. I replaced all the plastic parts in the merrygoround and cleaned out the de filter and put in new media about 5 months ago. It filtered fine, not problems.

So here is my scenario. About 2 weeks ago, we had a big storm and it dumped all kinds of junk in the pool. The 2 filters before the de filter were clogged and it was not filtering right. I cleaned it out, but since then it doesnt seem to filter right, not much suction. I backwashed it 3 times and refilled it with media. It still wasnt working right (the pressure would jump up and down). I left it run, then came out to find the pressure down and all the water in the filter was boiling hot and not circulating. So….what’s wrong with it???
