How To Troubleshoot D.E. Pool Filters
The Diatomous Earth swimming pool filter, commonly known as the “D.E. Pool Filter” for short can be a great asset to your pool water during the summer. However when your D.E. pool filter starts to give you trouble or causes problems you will have to preform something called “Pool Filter Troubleshooting”. When you troubleshoot your D.E. pool filter you will be eliminating what parts are good and won’t need to be replaced. You will also be able to find out what parts have failed on the D.E. pool filter and then be able to replace them.
Even though there are many different models and styles of Diatomous Earth swimming pool filters, the internal / external parts like filter grids, filter grid manifolds, o-rings and multiports work in the same way. These parts are also the ones that commonly fail or will need to be repaired no matter what brand or model filter you have. Most problems that you will experience with a D.E. pool filter will be caused by lack of proper maintenance by the owner. This includes leaving the pool filter out in the winter elements in the off season, not acid washing the pool filter grids, not replacing needed parts like failing mulitports and leaking o-rings. All of these parts will start to show age and wear before they fail but often they are not replaced until they completely fail. There will of course be unique situations where your D.E. pool filter is experiencing something that no one has ever seen before but there are also many common problems with D.E pool filters.
There are also two different types of D.E pool filters. Some D.E filters will use grid to filter the pool water and others will use something called “fingers”. These finger filter grids are found mostly in the Hayward EC-series pool filter line. Filter Grids and Filter Fingers can give you the same kind of problems as they are both covered in a fine mesh. If this mesh becomes damaged on either a D.E. filter finger or on a grid the D.E. powder will wind up back in the pool. So just because one is shaped like a finger and one is shaped like a grid, that doesn’t mean any one is stronger or won’t give you less problems, as they both will if damaged.
Problem: “My Pool Filter Is Putting D.E. Back Into The Pool”
Solution: When a D.E. swimming pool filter lets d.e powder back into the swimming pool it means that the filter grids, filter fingers, filter manifold or the multiport is bad. When the filter grids have a rip or tear in them they will allow D.E. to pass back into the pool. When the manifold is cracked it will do the same. If the multiport is bad it can cause the D.E. powder to not go into the filter at all and instead go directly back into the pool. If you are seeing small amounts of D.E. powder in your pool chances are that you have a rip or tear in your filter grid.
Problem: “My Hayward EC-series D.E. Pool Filter Is Allowing D.E. Powder Back Into The Swimming Pool and I have found no rips or tears in the fingers”.
Solution: The Hayward EC series line of filters not only uses filter fingers but also uses something called “tube sheets”. These tube sheets are the plastic disks that all of the fingers slide through. There is a top and a bottom tube sheet in all Hayward EC series pool filters. Chances are that you have cracks in your tube sheets. Look in the center of the tube sheet and you will see spider cracks in the tube sheet. These types of cracks are caused by bumping the handle to hard when back washing. Replace the cracked tube sheets and D.E. powder will not go into your swimming pool any longer.
Problem: “My multiport is on filter but the pool is not clearing up”.
Solution: Just because the multiport dial is set on the filter mode does not mean its actually working correctly. Many times the spider gasket inside of the muliport will go bad and then you will think the pool is set on filter mode but the water is really being diverted to the pool or out the backwash line instead. Replace the multiport or the mulitport gasket to correct this problem.
Problem: “My D.E. Pool Filter Gauge Shows High Pressure Even When Its Not Running”
Solution: If the gauge on your D.E. pool filter shows a high pressure even when its off then most likely your gauge is broken and needs to be replaced.
Problem: “Where Can I have My Pool Filter Acid Washed?”
Solution: Most swimming pool supply centers will offer swimming pool filter acid washing. You will usually have to bring down your pool filter grids or fingers and they can acid wash them for you. You can also soak your grids in white vinegar to help cleanse your filter grids as well.
Problem: “How Do I access My Filter Grids Or Fingers?”
Solution: You will need to remove the bolts around the flange or remove the belly bad nut and spring. Once you do either one you will be able to access the filter grids.
Problem: “My Backwash Line Has Water Coming From It When On Filter.”
Solution: If your backwash line has water coming from it when the swimming pool pump is running and the mulitport is set on filter then this means that you have a bad multiport gasket or possibly the entire multiport is bad. You should change either the gasket or the multiport.
Problem: “How Do I bleed The Air From My D.E. Pool Filter?”
Solution: You can bleed the air out or your D.E. pool filter by using the air bleed screw that will be on top of the filter. Most new filters will have an auto air bleed that will bleed the air for you. If you are looking to bleed the air out of the Hayward EC style filters then you will find the air bleeder screw right by the discharge fitting. On other D.E. pool filters the air bleed screw is usually near the gauge on the pool filter. The air bleed screw is also always on the highest point of the filter.
I’m still losing pressure after only a minute of vacuming the pool. The water isn’t that dirty at all, I’ve cleaned the tubes and they’re sparkly white, cheched for rips or tears, checked for leaks, added 4lbs of DE like the filter says. I start out with low pressure at the gauge, then builds to 20+ lbs. I only get less than a minute before bumping the handle to get another minute of vacume time. Does anyone have any ideas? I don’t know what to do anymore. It is a Hayward Extended Cycle Model EC40
Please Help?
Hi TY,
Open the back wash valve and vacuum, This is called a power vacuum.
This will give you more suction. You will also need to put the garden hose in the pool to bring the water back up.
What kinds of debris are in your pool?
Let me know if you need more help,
Joseph
Thanks Joseph,
You mean the drain valve at the bottom of the filter, right?
and I do this with the pump running and it won’t do damage right?
Ty
Hi TY,
Yes, the valve on the back and bottom of the filter,
Before you get started, make sure the PUMP STRAINER BASKET is clean and not full of debris. This is a very commonly over looked problem that many people have, They just empty the pool skimmers and never realize that the pump basket can also get clogged.
You will always want to shut the pump off before moving any valve.
So just like this,
1) Prime the pool vacuum hose,
2) Make sure the filter system is off and open the backwash valve
3) Turn filter on and start vacuuming KEEPING IN MIND that the skimmer basket will collect debris while your vacuuming, so make sure to stop every once and a while and check to see if the basket is full or clogged(which would give you less suction)
4) Vacuum pool with garden hose in the pool to replace the water.
If you have any other questions, please let me know,

I have De going back in pool. I have taken apart grids and inspected everything seems fine. The multiport is leaking at backwash valve and making noise. Also the chlorinator is leeking over the top and oring on the filter is now leaking since I took it apart. Not sure if everything is related or not
I have a Hayward EC-40 DE filter for above ground pool and can’t get a strong flow out of the return. I bumped and regenerated the filter, added the appropriate amount of DE, removed the air out of the filter, filled the skimming pot with water, turned on the filter and still no suction into the pump or flow out of the return. What do I do next? Thanks
Hi Craig,
I would say its time to open the filter up and do a major cleaning, The filter , tube sheets and all internal parts are probably “caked” with DE
Let me know if you need more help,

I recently replaced the grids in my DE Filter….My problem is that the pressure is normal (10 PSI) when the grids are cleaned but the pressure spikes to over 20PSI within a week after cleaning resulting in little or no flow/suction in the skimmer and/or pool cleaner (i.e., Hayward Navagitor)….I’ve had a pool company come out and they have performed a thorough cleaning of the grids two times within the past month and also tried a different type of DE Powder (i.e., Dicalite) and none seemed to help the problem and the pool guy says he has never seen anything like this….He inspected the grids and said they look perfect …..The water is clear and the only chemicals added to the water is Chlorine tablets in the floater and a cup of muratic acid each time it is backwashed (i.e., performed every two months prior to replacing the grids)…..The pressure problem appears to have started when I replaced the grids which seems odd since my old grids were over 10 years old and the pressure was normal (10 PSI – 15 PSI) with the old grids…..HELP!!!!!….Thanks.
Thanks for your help. I opened up the filter and it was completely caked with DE as you thought it would. I cleaned the filter fingers and filter and then added the 4 lbs of DE. I thought everything was fine as the pressure was back to the 12-14 PSI that it normally is with a strong flow out of the return; but then, after about an 1 hr, the PSI went back to 22-24 and there was no flow out of the return. What else can I do? Is it something with the air valve? Is it time to bring the filter in for the muratic acid cleaning? Thanks
Hi Craig,
I would say, you should check a few things,
1) Check the tube sheets for cracks,
2) Make sure both of your c-clips are intact
3) If the “fingers” look brown soak them in vinegar for a few hours to make them clean and white,
Try that,
Joseph
I just switched over from a sand filter to a brand new EC65. The pressure on the jets is normal. Everything seems to be normal except for the precoat pressure. I put 6lbs. in the skimmer and still no pressure on the gauge. Gauge maybe bad? I’m not really sure how these things work so help would be much appriciated.
Hi Laura,
Yes, The gauge could be defective or bad. This is common, sometimes during shipping the gauges get stuck or break.
Tap the gauge with some “brute force” and see if it “unsticks”.
If not just ask the place where you got it from for a new gauge.
Please let me know if you need any more help.

I have a Pentair DE filter that I have just replaced the internal grids, manifold. Pressure gauge is at around 18. Have one return that when pump is started force of water comming out is high.
Problem, after a few hours force of water from return decreases. Valve pressure only increased to about 20. If I open pump skimmer (was clean) and restart water comming out of return is again high.
Do I need to backwash? Could there be air in the filter?
Hi Bob
Yes, At that point I would back wash. As your pool water gets filtered more and more the time between back washed will grow. Even if you pool water is clear there could be a lor of TDS to filter out.
Let me know if you need more help or have any other questions.

I have a above ground pool this is my 1st pool.I have a De filter which I heard is the best. Before setting up the pool a clean the filter in a pail of water with acid and add 6-8 pounds of De.My flow is slow at times it maintanes about 15-18 PSI .I think its time to Back wash how do I do that. Please can you give me step by step directions.I have opened the value at the bottom while the pool is running is that the correct way to do it? I also did it while it was not running and I got white DE comming out of the value. Please Help. Thanks

I RECENTLY PURCHASED EC40 D.E FILTER AT THE BEGINNING OFTHE SUMMER.
WHEN I’M READY TO CLOSE THE POOL IN SEPT CAN YOU GIVE ME ADVICE ON THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN IT. SHOULD I TAKE IT APART? . DO I HAVE TO TAKE IT APART? HOW DO I CLEAN IT. THANKS
Hi Lucille,
Yes, you could take it apart(The Best) or use a filter cleaning wand, In a week or so I will be adding some new articles on how to close pools and wash filters etc. Subscribe to the rss feed or keep checking back and we will have all the info you need.

I have a Haywood Pro-Grid DE filter on an inground pool. I backwashed it the other day and afterwards noticed that the skimmer was making a gurgling sound while running and didn’t seem to have as strong suction as normal. The filter/multi port area was also making noise that seemed like it had air running through it. While it was running, I opened the air release valve at the top of the filter and a little air came out followed by water. It still has shown the same noisy symptoms even now, 2 days later. How do I properly address air issues?
Hi Mike,
There is a leak somewhere in your suction side of your pump.
