Beckett Oil Burner Bleed Screw
Problem: “How do I bleed the air out of my Beckett burner oil lines”

Solution: Hit the reset button on the motor while opening the bleed screw on the pump. It is a good idea to make sure you loosen the bleed screw before hand to make sure its not tight, then just hand tighten it, so when you hit the reset button you can just open the Beckett burner bleed screw a half turn and let the air out of the line. The bleed screw is located in the front or the side of the oil pump on the burner.

Solution: If you are a homeowner then its seriously time to call in a heating professional to have your burner cleaned and adjusted. If you are a heating professional and are clueless because you have never really worked on Beckett oil burners then you will need to adjust the flame, air, intake and possible clean the boiler. It might be a good idea to get some kind of factory training.

Regular Maintenance Tips:

According to the manufacturer, it is recommended for the owner to hire a service professional to perform a regular maintenance on a yearly basis. It is also strongly suggested not to tamper with or make any incorrect adjustments on the unit, controls and any other critical area and parts by owner’s hands because it could lead into further problems such as asphyxiation, explosion or fire. Always make sure that a qualified service technician starts the work on the jobsite.

This is because operation and adjustment of the oil burner requires many hours of in-depth technical training and skillful use of combustion test instruments and other test equipment, and these could not be easily acquired by regular customer over the books or any other online resources.

However, as an owner of this burner you can do a few basic things before you make a service call:

– Check the outside oil supply line. It is visible and usually transparent pipe, and you can inspect any signs of leakage around the area.
– Also check the oil supply system. All fittings should be leak-tight. The supply lines should be free of water, sludge and other restrictions.
– If you can, verify the nozzle is the one originally specified by the appliance manufacturer.  Sometimes it can result in malfunction or poor performance having the nozzle of different specifications from the same manufacturer.
– Inspect the igniter spring contacts. Clean or replace if corroded.
– Inspect all gaskets. Replace any that are damaged or would fail to seal adequately.

Here are manual steps on how to replace Beckett Oil Burner Blower Wheel (Note: This is only for your reference. Do not attempt to do it yourself. Always contact your qualified service technician or serviceman first):

    • If U have flame, check cad cell reading, must be less then 1600ohm
If U dont have flame check transformer, electrodes or even replace the nozzle ( every year recomended)

      • You are right about the cad cell sensor eye causing intermittant shutdowns & startups in Beckett & other brands of oil burners. First, make sure that the cad cell eye is cleaned & free from any soot!
The resitance of the cad cell is very critical & can be tested with the cad cell wires removed from the burner control module during the initial start up after you hit the resent button. You must open the furnace flame viewing service port & make sure that you have a flame & if you do then proceed to check the cad cell with an analog ohm meter. I stress an analog meter (older type non digital meter) because some digital meters will not read the cad cell resistance with any accuracy. In the presence of the burner’s flame, you are looking for a resistance of say 400 ohms to 1500 ohms for a good cad cell. You can also test the cad cell out of the circuit & on the bench by shinning a flashlight into it & reading the resistance on your meter. Too high a resistance or too low a resistance & the burner will not run beyond the 15 or 30 second point before it trips the burner control module’s red button circuit breaker. If in doubt, replace the cad cell as it is easy & cheap to replace. Remember, these cad cell sensors can really drive you insane as they can also be intermittantly good or bad.

  8. I have a Beckett Oil/Kerosene heater to heat my home. It was working fine last year when we bought the home in January. We used the furnace for about 3 months and worked fine. We just started using it cuz the cold months started. It was working fine for about 2 days. Then this started happening… It turns on and heats up and the blower motor starts up. after about maybe a minute or so you can hear the burner turning itself on and off repeatedly. On,off,on,off,on,off. Ive tried to research this problem online and have found nothing. Is this an easy fix or is it serious? Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you!!

  9. I have a Beckett burner that has black smoke coming from the burner box. It has been cleaned, new filters and fuel. Still smoking, any ideas ?

    • If the burner was cleaned right & the air volume setting was adjusted properly & the nozzle was replaced & adjusted right, as a bad nozzle can cause sooting, I would suspect that your high voltage transformer (the transformer that produces the burner’s spark with about 10,000 & 15,000 volts) is going bad. If the high voltage from this transformer is too low, then sooting & black smoke will certainly increase.
