Question:
I have a Hayward sand filter. After changing a spring in the handle, it doesn’t seem to be filtering the water but just circulating it. How do I check to see? Could something have been put back together incorrectly or need replacing. ~CathyHayward Sand Filter Multiport Spring Handle Replacement

Answer:

Hi Cathy,

Yes, when you removed the top part of the multiport to change the spring you have to be very careful that you set he multiport back in the right position that it was removed. What I usually do is mark the outside of the multiport body.

What could be happening is that when you put it back together you didn’t match up the ports correctly and now when its on filter its actually on recirculate etc.

Another thing to check for is the spider gasket that is inside of the multiport. If this is work or in bad shape that could also cause the problem your having.

I would first make sure that you have the top of the multiport placed in correctly.

Please let me know if you have any more questions and if you do just leave them in the comments are a below and I will be more then glad to help you further.

  1. How can i fix the problem now that it is already back together and will not be able to mark the out side to put it back together correctly

    • Hi Cathy,

What you will have to do is to take it all back apart and even remove the spring and then line up the valve body with the inner valve ports to make sure you have the positions correct.

I have updated the above article with a complete parts break down and a diagram of how it works and goes together.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  2. I have a Hayward sand filter circa 1997. The multiport valve is leaking and it feels like the spring could be bad.

Do you recommend replacing the entire multiport valve, or is a rebuilt kit available? Whatever the answer, is there a recommended place to buy either the multiport valve or the rebuild kit?

Also, I can’t read the handle placement words around the ring. Is there a replacement for this?

    • Hi Marshall,

I would get a completely new multi-port, because if all of that is damaged worn, its just better to replace the entire thing.

If you like you can email me and send me a picture of the unit and the model #’s off of it and I can get you a price on a replacement,

send me an email @ joseph at wetheadmedia.com with the above and I will send you pricing etc.

  3. Dear Joseph,

I’ve been having trouble with my HJayward filter and was wondering if you could stear me in the right direction. The trouble is the water is as clear can be. The valve on top works great. the hoses are new along with clamps. I have filter sand on the bottom of the pool and the Kreepy crawler won’t even suck it up. Is there something inside the tank thats broke?

    • Hi Tim,

It sounds like your laterals are broken or damaged in the bottom of your filter,

Let me know if you need more help.

  4. Just in case someone runs into this problem again, after replacing the steel spring in the top of the sand filter valve, the front of the handle should center on the small port, the back of the handle centers over the wide port in the back of the valve. After replacing the spring, you may need to use a couple small wood presses to squeeze the valve, in order to replace the retaining pin, that is just driven out with a long punch.

  5. We have our multiport head put back on wrong. We have tried over and over and we’re not getting it lined up correctly. We can’t find a diagram. PLEASE tell us what should line up.

  6. I have an above ground Waterway multiport valve and the handle has snapped in two. Can I replace the handle without having to disassemble the the complete head? Will the roll pin knock-out and handle remove, or is it more technical than that? I am unable to locate specific instructions with detailed drawings. Please advise!!!
