Mold is a pesky problem that affects millions of people each year. One of the most popular places in your home that mold can be found growing is in your bathroom. This is the most common area of the home for mold growth because there is lots of humidity and moisture there. In fact, that is evident simply based on the main places it grows, which is around the bathtub, shower curtain and vanity. The following information will provide you with useful tips, techniques and products so you can effectively learn how to remove it from a bathroom.

Brief Overview of the Causes of Mold Growth

It is important to take a brief moment to mention some of the most common causes of its growth:
– High humidity
– Areas that are damp often
– Poor air circulation
– Low or poor levels of lighting
– Environments that are warm

Products you will need for Mold Removal

Though there are many products on the market cited for their mold removal capabilities, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on specialized products. In fact, the some of the most common products you can use are dish soap, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, borax or Clorox bleach; more than likely these are items already at your home. The important thing to remember is that something is needed to not only kill it permanently, but to prevent it from coming back as well. Regardless which of these products you choose to use, they all work great!

Useful Tips and Techniques

One of the most important things to remember when dealing with mold is that some forms are toxic; therefore, it is a good idea to wear a breathing mask when cleaning it. Bleach is a great product to use for this as it can kill every type of indoor mold, and its spores; thus, leaving the surface sanitized and protected from future growth. Yet, if you are working with a porous material such as drywall or wood, then bleach may not be your best choice. It may not be the best because it does not penetrate through porous materials. So, although it will kill the surface mold, it will leave the roots below and allow it to grow on the surface again; thus making it only a temporary fix.
Alternatively, products such as vinegar and borax will kill it regardless where it is growing. You must be careful which product you choose to use, because although every product listed above will kill the mold, some such as ammonia leave behind the dead mold and spores that can remain allergenic and also need to be removed. If this is the case, you will have to follow up the ammonia with a dish liquid mixture to wipe the dead mold away.

Prevent the Mold from coming back

After you’ve gone through the motions of getting rid of it, it is important to prevent it from coming back. The first place to begin is by searching for and repairing any leaks that are present. Next, you will want to make sure your bathroom fan is working properly, if you have one installed. Doing both of these things will ensure the humidity and moisture levels decline in your bathroom.

Another thing you can do is buy mold and mildew-proof caulking. Just keep in mind that you don’t want to paint or caulk over existing mold. You’ll first need to clean it off and allow the area to completely dry. Then you will simply apply the caulking to ensure it will not grow around your bathtub anymore.

In the end, if you learn how to effectively get rid of it and prevent it from coming back, you will no longer have to deal with this annoying problem. By using the right products to kill and remove the mold and its spores you will be on the right track. However, you will need to continue maintaining your mold-free status by keeping your bathroom clean, dry and well-ventilated. The best way to manage this situation is by creating a routine that works for you; just make sure the routine involves you drying the shower and sink area each time you use it and keeping up on the regularly required maintenance.

  1. Great information for people not knowing a lot about mold. The only thing that I would suggest is using product that can penetrate the surface of the problem. That will kill the mold and usually protect it from returning. They also make product that help prevent mold growth.
