Best Ways To Remove Water From The Pool CoverIf you have water on top of your above ground or in-ground swimming pool cover you will need to remove it before you can remove the cover from the swimming pool. There are many ways that you can easily remove the water from the pool cover. You can use a swimming pool cover pump, a bucket to bail the water, or you could even start a siphon with a hose and let gravity drain the pool for you.

The one thing you should know is that the water on top of your pool cover might only look like a few inches but across a large area this amount of water adds up to many gallons. Some people think they can just ball up the pool cover and then just lift it off with the water inside the pool cover, but to their surprise they realize that the little bit of water or what they thought was a little bit really ways thousands of pounds.

The best way is to really use a leaf rake and a good pool cover pump to remove all of the water from the pool. You also should remove the water from the top of the pool cover often and should not wait until you have excessive amounts of water on the cover because our pool cover could fall into the pool. Also if you have large amounts of water on the pool cover you will need to spend many hours pumping the top of the pool free of water, compared to removing the water a little as a time over the course of a few months or after heavy rain and snow when it melts.

How To Remove Water From An Above Ground Pool Cover

If you have an above ground swimming pool you can remove the water in a few different ways. The first way you can remove the water is to use an pool cover pump and a hose to pump all the water from the top of the cover. You can buy pool cover pumps at your local pool store or even online. They come in different sizes and models to handle all sizes of swimming pools. Each swimming pool cover pump is also rated by how many gallons per hour it can pump, so if you are looking to pump the water from the top of the pool fast, then you will want to get a pump that can move water fast.

The second way you can remove water from the above ground cover is to use a bucket. This may be considered an old fashioned way to do things but if you only have a bucket and no cover pump then this may be your only choice. You will want to try to find something that is a bit heavy and place it on the pool cover where you are standing so the water will run towards you and then you can bail the water off of the pool cover using the bucket. This may take a while if there is a large amount of water on your pool cover. You may want to think about starting a siphon or buying a swimming pool cover pump.

The third way you can remove the water from your above ground pool cover is to do something called a siphon. This is when you use gravity and a hose to drain the water from the top of the pool cover. You will need to prime the hose first full of water and then in a rapid motion you will want to swing one end of the hose towards the ground while the other end of the water primed hose is submersed in the water on the cover and then you should start to see the water draining from the pool. This is called siphoning the water from the swimming pool cover.

How To Remove The Water From In-ground Pool Covers

If you need to remove water from the top of your In-ground pool you can do it one of two different ways. You can use a pool cover pump or you can bail the water from the top of the pool with a bucket. Alternatively you could siphon some of the water from the top of the pool cover if your pool is on a hillside or there is an area where you can run the hose that is below the water level of the pool.

The best way to remove the water from the top of your pool cover is to use a pool cover pump because there could be a large amount of water to pump off. Using a bucket to bail water off the pool cover may be worth it if you only have a small amount of water on the cover. But if its a large amount from a long winter season you really should get a pool cover pump.

How To Remove Leaves & Debris From The Pool Cover

If you have been using your pool cover pump or a siphon and the pump keeps jamming up or getting clogged with leafs or other debris you may want to remove some of this stuff before you continue to pump the water from the pool cover. You can do this by using something called a “leaf rake” that can be attached to your pool vacuum pole. You will want to first attach the leaf net to the vacuum pole and then you will to extend the pole. Once you have extended the pole you will want to put the leaf net in the center of the pool and with a “raking” motion you will want to pull the pole towards you. Once you get the leaf rake at the edge of the pool you will see that it will be full of leaves and other stuff. You now can dump it into the woods, a garbage pail or wherever you get rid of your trash.

  1. Does this method(pumping water off a pool cover – above ground pool) work if you pool cover is mesh and allows water to wick thru? Doesn’t tis actually pump water from under the cover as well, so you are pumping the water out of the wool too?

    • Kevin, don’t make the same mistake that I did, by using a bucket. I was draining my pool. I also have an above ground pool with a mesh winter cover. If you remove the cover carefully, keeping the leaves and dirt on top of the cover while removing it. You will have crystal clear water. It may take a few people holding it up. But the out come is well worth it.

  2. I bought a new winter cover last year. This spring I was not able to get water off the pool cover without taking a lot of water from underneath. I am now filling the pool and I see no water on the top of the cover. Do you have any suggestions on what I am doing wrong. Could I have a thin Cover on the pool.

    • Roger, if you have an above ground pool. Read comment above your question. It’s likely you have a mesh cover as well.

  3. How do I remove water sitting on top of my mesh pool cover. Pumps, buckets don,t work.
My inlet is low and I have to lower the water level to that point for winterizing. There is probably 500 gal. on the cover.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! THANKS
