When the motor finally starts off, then pull up on the transformer a little bit and listen carefully for the spark to jump to the electrodes. Be careful that this spark is usually very hot and will jump a gap of about a quarter inches. At this point, you need to make sure that you see a bright blue/white hot spark, instead of yellow or orange color spark. Then it is a sign that you might need to replace the transformer.
