Or do you replace the skimmer basket after you have poured the shock in through the skimmer ?

Your pump top is not sealed tightly. May need new gasket or what they call a Gasket Lube sold at various pool stores.
Or, one of the plastic pipe fittings is leaking or sucking air.

Always read the packing of your chosen type of shock before adding it to your pool. Trichlore and dichlore can safely be added in through the skimmer but calcium hypochlorite should be predissolved in a large bucket of water.
