The purpose of these steam traps is to automatically adjust to the different amounts of steam pressure. These types of traps have a huge capacity for their size and they are made with a strong and reliable design, almost ensuring long life for the traps. They have a range of ¼ inch to 1″ and a working pressure of up to 600 psig. These traps are made from brass, cast steel and stainless steel.
The Balanced Pressure Thermostatic Steam Trap Model MST21 & MST21H are used quite often in the HVAC industry; these traps have a PMO of 304 PSIG. They are available in 1/4 and 1/2 inches for the MST21 and the MST21H; the sizes available are 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch. The maximum operating temperature is 518 degrees Fahrenheit.
The welded stainless steel element is constructed for a self adjusting over the whole operating pressure range and will dispel all condensate when the temperature reaches 22 degrees Fahrenheit below the steam temp on a regular fill trap. The trap can stand up against water hammer and extreme operating conditions. These traps can be used with tracing, drips and sterilizers and can be used as a low capacity air vent.
The main components to these traps are the body, the cap, the capsule, the spring, spacer plate, strainer screen and the gasket. All parts to these traps are constructed with a stainless steel construction. These traps are made for a vertical installation, the inlets are located at the top of the trap and the outlet is located at the bottom of the trap. This design will allow for self-draining. The pipes will be overturned when used as an air vent rather than a trap.
Maintenance is very important on these traps; you must do an isolation of the trap from the supply and the return lines. For best service, take apart the entire trap and clean the strainer screen and take a look at the valve head and the seat to make sure that there are no obstructions. This should be done every three or four month, especially before and after heating season.
Other models of the Balanced Pressure Thermostatic Steam Traps are the T250, TM600, TH600L, RTA-125, RTH-125, and SBP-30LC just to name a few.
