Question:
I have acquired a free pool. I was told by the previous owners that the sand filter was new a year ago but they did not winterize it. The pump appears to work but the pressure gauge on the filter does not work. What kind of problems could this cause? Any information will be helpful. ~Kori
Answer:
Hi Kori,
It will be best to buy a new gauge for the filter because the pool filter gauge is very important in the daily operation of the pool. Your gauge will let you know when its time to back wash and what your filter pressure is at all times.
It is true that some people will look at the pool returns to determine when the pool needs to be back washed but that’s just not the right way.
The replacement gauge for your pool filter is under $20 and will be well worth it to replace. The gauge is also easy to remove and re-install and will only take a few minutes.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.

I have what appears to be fine white sand at the bottom of my pool when you try and vaccum or move it it turns into a dust cloud and dissappears into the water. Last season my filter (hayward 24″) tipped over during a wall blow out. could this have caused damage to the lats in the filter?
