How to Save Money on Your Home Heating Oil

WeT HeaD Knowledge

Homeowners more than ever before are tightening their belts when it comes to saving money. They cut costs on activities, on the amount of time they drive their cars and they tend to lower their thermostats to lower temps because they are afraid of huge heating bills. They rack their brains trying to come up with ways to help them save money anywhere they can. As you read on some of these tips you may recognize and there are hopefully others that don’t. You can apply these new tips in hopes to save you even more money.

They may purchase a new boiler or water heater. They may simply put on a sweater but with these solutions they can’t change the fact that you still have to pay for your home heating oil. Of course, these remedies can save you money but you want to limit the amount of times you need an oil drop during the winter. Here are some ways in order to save money on your home heating oil.

Do Your Homework

If you are still one of those homes that still use oil to heat your home, there is hope for you yet.  You can actually save money on your home heating if you are willing to do some extra legwork. If you are nearing the end of a contract, it would be in your best interest to start calling around and getting different prices. When you purchased your water heater or your boiler, you did not buy the first one you saw, you did some comparative shopping and you bought the best one. Why not take the time and do that for your home heating oil? Find out how many drops you are allowed in your contract and compare whether or not a fixed rate or a variable rate would be best for you.

You don’t always have to use the most popular oil company you see on TV. Check out the yellow pages and the Internet, you may find a company that you may not have thought to use but they have the best prices and the best service. In colder climate states, find out which companies have emergency oil drops at time and which company has the best customer service.

Make sure that your oil burner is at 100% full efficiency

In order to save you money on your home heating oil, you should have your oil burner and system checked before the heating season starts. Some homeowners assume that because the system worked through the last heating season that it is ready to go for this one. With wear and tear and constant running of these oil burner systems, you are bound to run into problems.

Sure, it is going to cost you money to have someone come in and take a look at the system but wouldn’t you rather pay one price at the start of the season than in the middle of the season if your boiler breaks down. Shop around for a qualified technician to inspect your system.

Change your Thermostat

If you are currently using an analog thermostat, you may not be saving the money you would be if you had a digital thermostat. By using a digital thermostat, you can preset the temperature to the energy efficient setting. If your home is empty during the day, then you can program your thermostat to a lower temperature and an hour or so before you are due to come home you can set the temperature for a higher setting. You cannot do this with an analog thermostat.

Do a Windows and Doors Check

Another great way to save on your home heating oil costs is to take a hard look at your windows and doors. Make sure that they do not leak, many homes especially older homes have windows that have not been replaced ever by checking to see if they leak, you can properly secure the windows with coverings and weather stripping to keep in the heat in. The same goes for all of the doors such as the front door, back door and any garage doors as well. Make sure they are properly sealed.

When it comes to heating your home, any little bit will help. Whether it is keeping your thermostat at a lower temperature or changing your oil company. Every little bit helps and if you follow these suggestions, you could see a drop in your home costs. You won’t to call the oil company so much and that can save you hundreds of dollars in the home heating season.
