How To Fix The Flapper On a Running Toilet

WeT HeaD Knowledge

Parts inside the tank of a toilet do not last forever. One of the first pieces to go is the Flapper. The flapper works when you flush the toilet the chain that is attached to the flapper and it will raise the flapper to let the water drain from the toilet. Then the flapper will close as the water drains out. When the flapper is down the water refills the toilet. When the flapper goes, you have to replace it. You can do this yourself and it will only cost you the amount of a new flapper. Flappers are available in any local plumbing supply store.First turn off the water supply to the toilet. On the back or side of the toilet, there will be a water handle, turn to the off position.

Now remove the top of the tank to the toilet. It may be heavy because it is made from porcelain. Be careful not to drop it. Get rid of the extra water in tank by flushing the toilet. The less water in the tank the easier it will be to fix the part. If you wish, you can put on rubber gloves but they are not necessary. Remove the old flapper; it may be a bit brittle so be careful. Open the new flapper; they will come with directions on how to install. If they don’t then you can follow these steps. Place the serrated strap into the hole located at the front of the new flapper. Then thread into the hole located at the front of the flapper.

Take the strap all the way until it locks into place where it is secure. Attach the chain to the new flapper; make sure the chain is securely on the flapper. Turn back on the water and flush the toilet, it is the next way to check for leaks. Place the tank lid back on and you are ready to go.
