Hi Sherry,

The small notch in the bottom of the escutcheon is a drain designed to let water out from behind the escutcheon before it can build up to a level where it can spill back inside the wall doing damage. It may simply be water running down the shower wall with a little bit getting in there but in many cases it is a sign that the valve is leaking and needs a new cartridge.

I would remove the knob or, handle, escutcheon and stop tube then turn it on and operate the shower while watching the valve around the stem to see if it is leaking.

We have a Moen shower faucet and have noticed a slight stain running down under the control. There is a small notch at the bottom of the round cover and we were wondering if its purpose is for water to run down. We aren't sure if a a valve needs to be replaced or some other part. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Curt,
Between the valve in the wall and the tub spout is a restriction causing water to go up to the shower head even when the diverter is not pulled up.

If this is a new installation did someone plumb the pipe down to the tub spout with something other than 1/2" copper or brass pipe? That can cause problems as well.

Do you have high water pressure?

Correction to above: (January 11, 2010 at 4:31 am)
Center knob is a Moen. Additionally, the source of water to the showerhead is in the wall as opposed to a flexible line from the spout. hope that helps.

Thanks

Hi: I have a problem similar to Tianna's. The worse thing about mine is that when I pull the knob (center knob) to run water in my tub, water (cold) comes out of the shower head. I've tried replacing the spout but I get the exact same result.

I have looked, but can not find what manufacturer made it.

Happy New Year

Hi Tianna,
I have a few questions that need answering before I can help you out.
What kind of mixing valve do you have for your tub/shower and what do you do to divert the water to the shower head?

Are we talking about a single handle, two handle, three handle mixing valve?
If there is any indication of the brand name that would be very helpful.
To divert the water to the shower do you turn the center knob on a 3 handle valve, pull up on a knob on the end of a spout, pull down on the spout, or push a button or, move a lever on the single handle valve?

Thanks,
Redwood

Here's my problem and I hope someone can help. When you turn on the shower more water comes running out of the tub faucet then comes out of the shower head. Plus all of the water running out of the faucet is cold so it makes it hard to control the temperature of the water coming out of the shower head. Help Please :)

Hi Michelle,

Happy New Year,

You can use a faucet handle puller to remove the handles.
