How To Fill A Swimming Pool (by Laurie)

WeT HeaD Knowledge

When I was married to my ex-husband he came up with the idea of filling our new above ground pool with pond water. He is a very creative and enterprising man. He is a builder and very good at his job. Well, except for the cement block foundation that caved in. That’s another story.

He had just finished building our new home. We decided we would put an above ground swimming pool in, mainly for our girls and their friends. He put up the deck and the swimming pool. Everything was ready. I had visions of us calling a company that delivers water for pools. I was concerned that it would be expensive. I have never understood the concept of paying for water. I also don’t understand why anyone would have to pay to go to a beach. But I digress. I expressed concern to him about having water brought in. He said he had another idea.

As I said, he is very enterprising, but when he came up with the idea of using pond water to fill our pool, I was appalled! All I could see in my mind was, my beautiful daughters swimming around in a dirty pool. My youngest daughter always has her mouth open in and out of water-(she still does). I envisioned her drinking pond water all day and numerous trips to the doctor.

He was undaunted and began the process of siphoning water out of the pond into our pool. Thankfully, he used a small hose so at least I was assured there would be no snakes in our pool. The girls were excited and wanted to get into the pool as it was filling up. Thankfully my ex nixed that idea. I have no problem with my girls swimming in lakes, but small, possibly stagnant pond water, I don’t think so.

To my amazement, the pool was soon filled. I was happy to see water in it but I was still skeptical. He then began the process of cleaning the water. I know he used a lot of bleach at first. Then he began putting other chemicals in and he hooked up the filter. One morning I woke up and walked out the back door to the pool. I thought I had opened the door to Munchkin Land. There sat a swimming pool, perfectly clear with the sun dancing on the water. I was no longer skeptical.
