How I (Arlene) Installed A Drain Pipe In My Wall

WeT HeaD Knowledge

Hi, My name is Arlene and I wanted to share how I Installed A Drain Pipe In My Wall. I was forever getting water in my garage and I knew the problem was this one certain wall.  I sat one day staring at this problem wondering how to fix it.  I knew it was going to be a big job to tackle with lots of shoveling and back breaking work. But being the DIY’er I can be or wanna be I felt challenged and not defeated.

This wall sloped downward and the water ran off into the driveway sometimes running into the clean-out, sometimes under the garage door and most of the times into the garage by the side wall.  With a pic and a shovel I dug down to the foundation, first cleaning the walls, then water proofing making sure to let it dry in between coats.  This house is old and so are the bricks with some of them, disintegrating. I tarred the very bottom row before I first did the rest of the work.

I laid some small stones and the black sheathing first, (a landscaping cloth)laying the corrugated pipe in it making sure this was situated away from the wall.  This had taken me several attempts to get it right and I found this difficult to work with.  When I was satisfied with it, I covered it back with a little stones and dirt.

Since this wall is situated under a deck and it barely filters any light the only plant which grows at all or well was either Pachysandra and Hosta.

The bottom of the wall has railroad to hold it in the dirt.  I cut these timbers in order for the pipe to fit and to drain the water from.  On a rainy day I can watch the water drain from my newly installed, pipe instead of in the garage. It is nice to see less water in the house and more water draining away from it.

The cost of this was very minimal.  I used a corrugated drainpipe which was about 8 bucks for 10 feet, the landscape cloth was a few bucks, the stones was about 1 dollar a bag.  The chiropractor bill was 69 dollars.
