How To Open & Close The PRO Grid D.E. Filter

If you need to open up your Hayward PRO Grid filter to inspect or clean the internal parts you can do so but first you will need to shut the filter system off. Next you will need to remove the drain plug which is located on the bottom and back of the filter. Once you have drained the pool filter you will need to loosen the tank nut and then slide the spring of the bolt. Now you can knock the belly band off of the tank housing. Once you do this you can use a Flat head screwdriver to pry the top part of the filter tank from the bottom, and then you will be able to remove the top of the filter.

Hayward PRO GRID Filter Troubleshooting

Pressure Gauge Always Reads The Same Pressure

If your pressure gauge on Hayward PRO Grid is always displaying the same pressure readings, there is a good chance that the gauge is made. This is a common mistake that many people will make. So if your pressure gauge never moves, just head on down to a local pool store and grab a new gauge for your filter. The old gauge will spin right out and then you can just spin the new gauge right in. You will also want to make sure that the filter system is off when you are replacing the filters pressure gauge.

My Hayward PRO Grid Is Putting D.E. Back Into The Pool

If your seeing D.E. come back into the swimming pool through your return jets or you have woken up to some on the swimming pool floor then chances are one of your filter grids has a whole or tear. You will have to open up the filter tank then wash the D.E. from the filter grids so you can inspect all of the grids for tears and holes. Usually when the filter grids start getting holes in them they are old and need to be replaced. If you sewed one of them chances are a new hole will just open up somewhere in that grid because the mesh will most likely be brittle.

Filter Tank Belly Band Is Leaking

If the belly band on your PRO Grid filter is leaking chances are the o-ring inside the tank is pinched or dry and cracked. What you will need to do is to shut the filter system down, drain your Hayward filter by removing the tank drain plug, and then you will want to remove the tank bolt, the spring and the belly band so you can inspect the filter tanks o-ring.

Water Is Coming Out Of The Back Wash Line While Set On Filter

If you are seeing water coming out of the back wash line while you have the filter running but the multiport valve is set on filter then chances are your spider gasket inside of your filters multiport is bad. You will either need to replace the entire multiport valve or you can try to change the gasket inside.

Filter Needs To Be Back Washed Every Few Minutes

If your filter pressure is going up every few minutes and you are back washing like crazy but the pool isn’t clearing up at all you may have to much caked D.E. on your filter grids. What you will need to do is to open up the filter and wash all the caked D.E. from the filter grids.

Washing Out The Filter Grids

Once you have the filter tank open you can then remove the grids and wash all the D.E. off of them with a garden hose. If you have a spray nozzle attachment for the hose then you should use it because that will help you remove the D.E. from all areas of the filter grids. After you wash all of the filter grids you will want to inspect all the grids for rips and tears.

  1. after i bakcwashed my de hayward filter the pressure was 11 psi. after three days it climbs to 30 psi and my heater shuts off do to high pressure. i already cleaned the grids that wear caked, but pressure seems to keep rising. filter is 4 years old.

    • Hi Robert,

This is common if you just opened your pool. Are you adding new D.E. every time you back wash? Water is the water condition of your pool? Green, cloudy, clear etc?

Please let me know and I can help you further.

  2. My 4800 de filter lower body has a crack in the lower surface and under the internal pickup
I have not been able to find a replacement body.
    Can this crack be repaired?

  3. I have a Hayward D.E. filter approx 17 years old. Never had a problem. This season I needed to replace the spider ring due to the water backwashing even when in the filter position. I have broken down the filter and noticed some tears in the grid. I have also noticed in the pool, when i vacuum, a pasty substance that my Polaris 9300 vacuum keeps picking up. Based on what i have read this must be D.E. coming back into the pool, due to the tears in the grids. Can the grids be replaced or do i need a filter.
    Thank you.

    • Hi Bob,

You can buy replacements grids separately or the whole set. They are available either way.

That is why the “pasty” substance is coming back into the pool, because of the rip. You are correct, That is D.E.

Let me know if you need more help.

      Joseph

  4. I have a Hayward DE. Backwashed and hosed off the filter for the first time. Cannot seem to get the pressure to stay below 20psi. Shocked it once overnight and same thing. All chemicals seem right. I do notice that the top pressure valve is leaking water. Could this be the source of why the pressure is not staying down?

    • Hi Chris,

I can help you, I just have a few questions first ;-)

How is the flow at 20 psi?

      Is it weak or strong?

Also how old is the filter?

Have you tried acid washing the grids and are they yellow?

Please let me know and I can help you further,

      Joseph

      • The flow coming back into the pool is lower than when I changed the dial to recirculate. The pool and filtration unit is only 9 weeks old. The grids were not yellow, and just by rinsing them with the hose, they were like brand new. The major change was that I used Maxi-Flock to clear up the smaller particles and followed the instructions with backwashing 3 times.

  5. Hello Joseph,
I have a hayward DE filter which I bought pre-owned with an above ground pool. All was well until a few weeks ago when my water became cloudy. All the chemicals were in check but then I noticed DE on the pool floor. After taking the filter apart and cleaning it I found a small crack in the manifold so I replaced it which did not fix the problem. Now my water is turning green and is very murky so I took the filter apart again and did find a 1 inch tear in the top of two of the grids. Could this be what is also causing my pool to turn so green and cloudy?
    Thanks for your time.

  6. Hi, I have a hayward D.E. 4800 series. I am getting a large amount of D.E. back into the pool even after I changed all the grids also I changed the o ring on the manifold. What else should I look for to see what’s causing this problem. Thanks for your help

  7. Hello,
I have a fairly new Hayward DE 4800 filter. Just this year I have noticed the need to purge air out of the filter. It seems after the filter has been off for several hours (or for a larger test, I left the filter off for a couple of days)and a lot of air gets into the filter. I open the purge valve on the top and once the air is out, all is good. This has happened since I took the unit apart to clean each filter grid. I have replaced the o-ring gasket as well as the rings on my backwash valve. I don’t see any de powder in the pool nor does the filter leak when running. I did clean and add lube to the gaskets (purchased the pool seal lube). Any ideas?

  8. I just open and clean the Hayward filtration system. When I was adding DE it started leaking at the top where the manual valve is. I put it in open position but it blew it out. What is wrong?

  9. Have a Hayward Northstar pump; vacuumed to waste on Saturday, turned off pump, switched to filter/filtration, now the reservoir will not fill all the way, I see bubbles returning to pool, and the new pressure gauge shows zero. I have checked for leaks, repositioned the strainer cover, still same problem exists. Any ideas??

  10. I have a hayward sp714t1 filter after I backwash filter, rinse and then cut the filter back on there looks to be sand blowing back into the pool throught the jets, we replaced the lateral last year did not cure the problem …could it be the thing on top of the filter that you switch from filter to backwash not sure what it’s called. any suggestions

  11. My water is clear and the Hayward DC filter seems to be running fine. However, when I turn the heater on, a white substance (maybe DE) is coming into the pool. When I don’t run the heater this doesn’t happen. Any suggestions?

  12. cleaned the filter fingers and were no rips or tears yet the filter continues to build pressure and need back washing every 10 min.

  13. I Have a 17″ swim pro filter that has a leal on the thank, is possible to fix it? I tryed epoxic but it breaks again

  14. I have a Hayward DE ProGrid and have used it successfully the last three seasons since putting in a new pool. Today, after hooking it all up, I tried to run it but it doesn’t seem to draw water from the pool or send it back out. Pretty sure I have it all connected correctly and filled pool and filter/pump before starting. Have not added DE yet as I thought I needed to wait until water cycled through a few times. The pool is green and I can’t chlorinate until I get the pump and filter going (or can I?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Bob M
