How To Keep Your House Warm

When the winter weather rolls in, your house can become cold really fast if you have drafty windows, leaky doors, or possibly a boiler or heating system that is not working properly. The first thing you will want to do is to find out what parts of your home need to be weatherized and then you will need to figure out what materials you need. Keep Your House Warm

You can weatherize windows and doors for a fairly affordable price. Places like walmart sell window kits that can be installed in minutes with just a step stool and a hair dryer. You can also buy door strips and door jam weather striping as well for under $10 and that will help you keep the draft out.

The first thing you will want to do is to walk over to each one of your exterior doors and use your hand and feel for drafts. If you have drafts at the bottom of the door you will need to replace the weather stripping on the bottom of the door. If you feel a draft coming from the door jam, you will need to replace the weather stripping inside of the door jam. You can install the weather stripping in only a few minutes and you will stop that drafty door from letting in all the cold air which could be costing you hundreds of dollars a year in heating bills.

The second thing you will want to do is to check all your windows and make sure that all the storm windows are down. If the storm windows are down and your windows are still leaking you can use the window kits that you bought from Walmart and stick on your double-sided tape and then use the hair dryer to tighten the plastic. Window kits can prevent all that cold air from blowing inside of your house or apartment and also save you on your heating bills.

The Third thing you will want to do is to call a licensed boiler or heating professional and have them inspect and tune-up your heating system. A furnace or boiler that is not running at 100% efficiency could waste fuel and that will wind up increasing your fuel bills. The boiler or furnace tune-up will more then pay for itself over the course of the winter heating season. Its always best to have the heating system tuned up before the winter season because you can generally get a better price for the tune-up, but it still will be well worth it even if its mid heating season.
